This got completely reversed in the decade of 80’s where women once wore bold dresses having shoulder pads and men wore shirts in full sleeves that were stitched in expensive material together with loose fitting baggy trousers which were slightly tapered at the ankle. Former punks introduced the Romantic Movement with designer clothes. Leather and designer jeans caught the creativity of the people.

Women also started wearing pointed and high heeled shoes for business purposes. Jelly shoes characterised by their transparent and glossy colour became popular at parties. Jogging pants and tracksuits turned popular leisure wear. Acid washed faded jeans and denim jackets in addition to piercing and tattooing were made popular by the music bands. Men started to wear flashy earrings. Hairstyle included a lot of mousse which resulted in a shiny voluminous look. Crimped hair with contrasting streaks of colour was well-liked by teenagers. Men kept longer hair and females kept short hair.

Jewellery encrusted with precious stones became a display of wealth and power. Women wore long outlandish earrings with contrasting pairs. They also did not shy away from wearing single earrings. Digital watches with metal wristbands began popularising the beginning of ‘80s but afterwards adults returned to dial watches. Teens still preferred the radiant colours of plastic watches. Watch faces had roman numerals. The status defining design was Movado then which featured a sleek watch with a dot at 12. Sometimes people also used to wear more than one watch on one arm. People also wore fine gold bracelets and hoop earrings.

Designer bags manufactured from leather were also among the trend setters. Clutch bags captivated interest amongst people for being so firm and appressed. Stylish briefcases also sold very well. Women tried to match shoe colors with their bags. Numerous types of shawls in different colours and patterns were around for different events. In the daytime they wore shawls with tank tops and with gowns at night. Designer underwear for women also made a part of the trend especially the ones with laces and coloured boxer shorts for men. Small metal framed glasses became common towards 1984-85. A smaller rounder type continued to be popular through the entire decade.
